What incomplete WiFi really costs you day to day
The classic trap: stacking up repeaters over the years. Each repeater halves throughput and adds latency; by the third, the network becomes unpredictable. The right approach is whole-property sizing — indoors and out.

Sizing: how many access points for your surface area?
- Recent construction (drywall, light concrete): one access point per 100-120 m² per level.
- Old stone buildings (village houses, farmhouses): one access point per 50-80 m² — a 50 cm stone wall attenuates signal as much as three modern partitions.
- Floors count separately: a concrete slab rarely lets a usable signal through. A 200 m² house on two levels is treated as two 100 m² zones, with at least one AP per level.
- Outdoors counts separately: terrace, pool and garden are not covered "by overflow" from inside — coated glazing and walls block most of the signal.

Real case #1: 300 m² villa in Mougins
The deployed solution: five access points — two on the ground floor, two upstairs, one in the basement — PoE-cabled through the attic and false ceilings, plus an IP65 outdoor AP under the roof overhang for the terrace and pool, and a point-to-point radio bridge to the pool house (no cable could cross the garden). One network name, seamless roaming: you walk from the living room to the pool without dropping a video call. Measured result: over 300 Mbps in every room, 150 Mbps poolside, intercom and cameras stable.
Real case #2: Haussmann-style apartment in Nice
The solution: two ceiling access points — one in the central corridor, one in the living room — powered over PoE via a discreet cable along the cornice, 5 GHz favoured (less crowded in apartment buildings), power levels tuned so as not to spill onto the neighbours, and the box demoted to modem duty. Contained cost, no wall chasing, and a uniform network above 200 Mbps in every room. It's the most common apartment pattern: two well-placed APs comfortably outperform any box-plus-repeater combo.
Garden, pool, outbuildings: covering outdoors durably
- Terrace and immediate surroundings: one outdoor AP against the house is usually enough.
- Large or terraced garden: one or two extra APs on high points (pergola, discreet mast), oriented from the heatmap.
- Distant outbuilding (pool house, guest studio, workshop): a dedicated point-to-point radio bridge — up to several hundred metres with line of sight — or a buried cable if a conduit exists.
To avoid at all costs: putting an indoor AP outside "for the summer" (it won't survive the humidity) and powerline adapters through outdoor sockets, unpredictable on older electrical installations.

FAQ on residential WiFi coverage
How many access points for a 300 m² villa?
Generally 3 to 5 indoor APs depending on materials and levels, plus outdoors (IP65 AP, possibly a radio bridge to an outbuilding). The detailed case of a Mougins villa is described in the article.
And for a 100-120 m² apartment?
Most often two well-placed ceiling APs are enough, even in old Nice buildings. The main challenge in apartment blocks is channel saturation from neighbours: we favour 5 GHz and controlled power levels.
Can you cover a garden or a pool?
Yes, with IP65 outdoor APs mounted on a sheltered façade or under a roof overhang. For a distant outbuilding (pool house, studio), a point-to-point radio bridge carries the network several hundred metres with line of sight.
Will you need to chase cables into the walls?
Very rarely. Cables run through attics, false ceilings, skirting, cornices or existing conduits. Where no route exists, a mesh link or radio bridge avoids works on that segment.
Can my current repeaters be reused?
Generally no: they're the cause of the instability (halved throughput, multiple networks, failed handovers). A clean installation replaces them with coordinated APs under a single network name, with automatic roaming.
