
WiFi Problems: Causes and Pro Solutions (French Riviera)
Decision tree: which problem do you have?
- WiFi is slow everywhere, all the time → suspect the internet line or the central equipment. Run a speed test over Ethernet directly on the box: if it's just as bad, the problem is with the provider or the line. If it's good wired but bad on WiFi, the culprit is your radio equipment (ageing box, bad channel, saturation).
- WiFi is slow only at certain times → congestion: too many simultaneous devices at home, or interference from neighbouring networks at peak hours (very common in Nice apartment buildings). The 2.4 GHz band suffers first.
- The connection drops intermittently, everywhere → line instability (have the ISP check it), an overheating box, faulty firmware, or strong intermittent interference (weather radar triggering DFS on 5 GHz, microwave oven, baby monitor).

The most frequent causes, from most to least common
2. Under-sized or ageing equipment. A consumer box struggles beyond 15-20 active devices. With smart-home gear, phones, TVs and voice assistants, a modern household passes that threshold quickly. Symptoms: random slowness, devices disconnecting for no reason.
3. Bad placement. A box inside a closed TV cabinet, on the floor, or against an outside wall serves the street rather than your living room. WiFi propagates poorly downwards and hates metal and water (aquariums, water heaters, mirrors).
4. Non-WiFi interference. Microwaves, baby monitors, analogue cameras and Bluetooth speakers all emit in the 2.4 GHz band. Weather radar can force a 5 GHz channel change (DFS) with a drop as a result.
5. Line or ISP problem. Throttled speeds, sync drops, slow DNS: WiFi is innocent, but it gets the blame. Hence the importance of the wired test before any conclusion.

A methodical diagnosis in 15 minutes
- Wired reference test: a computer plugged into the box via Ethernet, speed test. That's your baseline — WiFi will never beat it. Bad over wire = line/ISP problem.
- WiFi test next to the box: two metres away, line of sight. Good here but bad elsewhere = propagation problem. Bad even here = radio equipment or saturation.
- Channel analysis: a WiFi analyser app (free on smartphones) shows neighbouring networks and their channels. If yours is crowded, changing it takes two minutes in the box interface.
- Continuous ping during a drop: ping the box and an external site. If the box answers while the external fails, the drop comes from the line, not the WiFi.
Note the results room by room, and hour by hour if the problem is intermittent: that data turns "it works badly" into an actionable diagnosis — for you or for the technician.
Fixes to try yourself
- Reposition the box: elevated, unobstructed, central to the living area, away from metal and interference sources. It's free and often spectacular.
- Change channel: on 2.4 GHz, pick the least crowded of 1, 6 and 11. On 5 GHz, prefer a non-DFS channel if drops coincide with automatic changes.
- Split the bands: naming the 2.4 and 5 GHz SSIDs differently lets you force important devices onto the fast band.
- Update the firmware of the box and restart problem devices (some cling to a distant access point).
- Offload the network: rarely used devices (old tablet, secondary TV) consume airtime even when idle — remove them or wire them.

FAQ on WiFi problems
Why is my WiFi slow when my fibre is fast?
Because the bottleneck is the radio link, not the line. A channel saturated by neighbours, a badly placed box, too many or too old devices: the wired reference test proves it in five minutes.
Should I switch internet providers?
Only if the direct Ethernet test on the box is bad. In most cases we see, the line is fine and the local network (radio, equipment, placement) is the real cause.
Why does my WiFi always drop at the same time of day?
That's the signature of congestion (neighbours coming home in the evening, usage peaks) or recurring interference (a device switching on at a fixed time). A channel analysis at the time of the problem identifies the culprit.
Is a WiFi repeater a good solution?
Rarely for intensive use: a repeater halves throughput and adds latency. For a persistent dead zone, a cabled access point or a proper mesh system is far more effective.
