Optimising WiFi Coverage in Nice, Cannes and Antibes (2025 Guide)

This is our reference guide on WiFi coverage: it brings together the complete method we apply on every project, from a 300 m² villa to a 50-room hotel. Four steps — survey, plan, installation, tests — each with the technical choices that matter: signal mapping, mesh versus wired, PoE, IP65 outdoor equipment. Why the French Riviera is hard terrain for WiFi

Riviera buildings stack up radio obstacles: 50 cm stone walls in the old buildings of Nice and Antibes (3 to 5 times the attenuation of drywall), reinforced concrete slabs between floors, metallised verandas, mirrors and coated glazing that reflect signal. Add outdoor usage — terraces, pools, terraced gardens — and, in dense urban areas, channel saturation from neighbouring networks.

The consequence: generic recipes ("add a repeater") often fail here. Reliable coverage is designed from real on-site measurements, not floor area. That's the whole point of the 4-step method below.

Step 1 — Survey and signal mapping

Everything starts with a heatmap: we walk the site with a measurement tool recording, room by room and outdoor zone by outdoor zone, signal strength (RSSI), signal-to-noise ratio, interference and real throughput. We overlay the building materials (stone, concrete, glass) and an inventory of usage: how many devices per zone, which applications (video calls, streaming, smart home, CCTV), which peak times.

The deliverable is a map of dead and weak zones with their causes identified. It determines how many access points are needed and where — and avoids the two classic mistakes: under-sizing (persistent dead zones) or over-sizing (interference between too many APs, wasted budget).

Step 2 — The plan: mesh or wired, PoE, indoor/outdoor

The radio plan turns the survey into architecture. The first structural choice: mesh or wired backbone.

Our practical rule: wired wherever possible, mesh where cable can't go. PoE (Power over Ethernet) simplifies everything: one cable per AP for data and power, clean ceiling mounting, remote restart from the switch. Outdoors — terraces, pools, gardens — we specify IP65 APs, waterproof and resistant to salt air, with UV-protected cable runs. Finally, the plan sets each AP's channels and power so they complement rather than jam each other. Step 3 — Installation and configuration

Installation follows the plan, not the other way round: every AP at its measured location, ceiling-mounted or high and unobstructed, never in a cupboard or behind furniture. Cabling (preferably Cat6a) is tested and certified before connection, the PoE switch sized with headroom.

Configuration: a single network name (SSID) across the site with roaming enabled (802.11k/v/r) to move between APs without drops — essential for WiFi telephony and mobile video calls; VLAN segmentation if the site hosts the public or sensitive equipment (detailed in our guest WiFi guide); power tuned AP by AP — the "everything at max" reflex creates zones where devices cling to a distant AP instead of switching to the nearest.

Step 4 — Testing, acceptance and maintenance

An installation isn't finished when "it works" but when it's measured. Acceptance testing repeats the initial mapping at the same points: up and down speeds, latency, roaming stability on the move, load behaviour with the target device count. The before/after figures are part of the report handed to the client.

Then coverage has to be maintained: remote monitoring (alerts for an offline AP or degradation), scheduled firmware updates, and channel re-tuning when the radio environment changes — one powerful new neighbouring network can degrade a perfect installation. FAQ on WiFi coverage and extension

What's the difference between a repeater and a mesh system?

A repeater blindly re-broadcasts the signal, halving throughput. Mesh creates a coordinated network: dedicated backhaul bands, automatic switching, central management. For intensive use, a wired backbone still beats both.

How many access points do I need for my surface area?

Order of magnitude: one AP per 80-120 m² in recent construction, one per 50-80 m² in old stone buildings. Floors and outdoor areas count separately. Only an on-site survey gives a reliable number.

Does installation require major works?

Rarely. PoE limits cabling to a single cable per AP, often run through attics, skirting or existing conduits. Where cable really can't go, a mesh link takes over for that segment.

Can you cover a terrace, garden or pool?
